How to embrace curves in contemporary home design

Curves have long been a feature in architecture and design. From the grand arches of Roman structures to the intricate curves of Gothic cathedrals to the elegant facades of the Art Deco movement, curvilinear forms have been central to design philosophies for centuries. So it’s no surprise curves are making waves in contemporary home design again. Curved walls, windows, and doorways, as well as rounded furniture and mirrors, are everywhere – and we’re leaning in.

Why do we keep coming back to curves? Organic shapes remind us of nature, and sweeping lines are familiar, making us feel more comfortable. When it comes to home design, curves soften spaces and intuitively guide movement, creating warm and inviting rooms. Of course, like many design styles, curves can be tricky to pull off. So this month, we’re embracing the round and sharing tips on how to incorporate curves into your custom home.

Curve ideas for your contemporary home design

Curved walls

Gone are the boring straight lines and right angles. One of the most striking ways to incorporate curves in your home is with contoured walls and partitions. In open-plan living areas, curved walls separate rooms and define spaces beautifully, softening the transition between spaces. You can make curved walls more subtle with shapely corridors or rounded cabinetry, or choose to bring drama and character with brightly coloured curves that make sweeping features.

Tip: Curved walls can be challenging to achieve, so choose a custom home builder who knows what they’re doing.

As home designers, we are always looking for ways to bring architectural interest to our clients’ homes. We want custom homes to look original (they’re custom, after all), and what’s more original than an arched window? We’re used to rectangular windows or floor-to-ceiling glass, especially in Perth, where we make the most of the warm light. Arched windows are not as common (at least in Australia), but we think they should be, as they create an interesting focal point in any room.

Tip: An arch is not just an arch. There are many different arch shapes, including round arches, three-pointed arches, and segmented arches. It’s best to work with a home designer to choose an arched window that will suit the rest of your home.Arched Windows contemporary home design

Rounded kitchen island

Are you planning on building a kitchen island in your custom home design? Why not opt for an oval one? Similarly to windows, standard designs usually feature rectangular kitchen features. Curved islands bring a unique softness and custom look to your busiest area in the house. Curved islands are also functional for families, as you can fit more chairs around them. And with no hard edges, you avoid unnecessary injuries (not an invitation to run in the house, kids!).

Tip: Ensure your kitchen layout can accommodate the curved island without compromising on workspace and traffic flow.

Curved furniture

Creating curvature in your home’s structure can be costly, as it requires expert craftsmanship. If you want to embrace the curved design trend without breaking the bank, consider investing in curved furniture instead. Think of round dining tables, oval coffee tables, and chairs with soft, rounded edges. Rounded sofas, for instance, are both romantic and versatile, adding a contemporary touch to any space. Many design experts assure that curved furniture is here to stay, making it a worthwhile investment.

Tip: Place curved furniture strategically to enhance the flow and comfort of your rooms.Curved Furniture contemporary home designBonus ‘curvy’ home design tips

Balance is key
Too many curves can overwhelm a space. Balance rounded corners with straight lines to make the curves stand out.

Create depth
Use curves to draw the eye to focal points within a space, creating a sense of depth and movement.

Simplicity is still impactful
You don’t have to go crazy with curves. Curved mirrors or a rounded vase will bring softness to any room.
