Everyone, at some point, has dreamed of living in a quaint cottage by the ocean. There’s something romantic about the thought of coming home to a cosy timber house and being able to hear a calming ocean breeze.
Our Cape Cod house plans incorporate the same look and charm from the beloved New England architectural style: the low, broad frame symmetrical building – built to withstand the stormy weather of Cape Cod – with a modernised design for Australian living.
Here are just a few examples of our Cape Cod-style homes that might encourage you to think about this design for your next home build.
Redesigning the old
Many of our award-winning range of quality homes, such as our two-storey Coco and Cape Mill, effortlessly replicate the simplicity of the Cape Cod house style.
The inspiration can be clearly seen first in exterior features of these homes. The double clay-brick construction is in keeping with the traditional design elements of a Cape Cod home: beautifully symmetrical in appearance, right down to the front door in the very centre.
The use of Cape Cod architecture continues, with multiple divided window-panes adorned by pitched roofs. The pitched roof concept was incorporated centuries ago by New England settlers in the namesake town. They felt that it would add light, space and ventilation to their cosy two-storey cottages by the sea.
Throughout the front gardens of our purpose-built Coco and Cape Mill two storey home designs, we further emulate the Cape Cod-style home with a generously-sized front porch, brick paving, and an adjoining path to your landscaped area (potentially a flower-filled front garden?).
The Cape Mill home design is decorated with traditional Cape Cod-style picket fencing which embellishes the homes’ top storey and boundaries of the garden. The picket fence has become synonymous with the dream of home ownership in the United States, and remains a popular fencing option in suburbs across the Western World.
In all senses, our purpose-built two-storey designs have kept the classical design elements of the Cape Cod home that began many moons ago with settlers on a rugged patch of coastline of the Atlantic Ocean.
Built for modern times
The traditional Cape Cod house design and its coastal roots make for one of the most interesting, unique architectural designs in the world. We took it upon ourselves to update this practical housing style for modern times.
We have updated the Cape Cod-style to include what many would consider necessities in Australia, such as convenient flyscreens on all opening windows across the house and an enormous double garage.
The interior of this home design is, in some respects, worlds away from the original Cape Cod homes of yesteryear. We included massive double bedrooms designed for modern families (yes, with built-in and walk-through robes) and contemporary light and power fixtures throughout.
You’ll love the polished, hard-wearing porcelain floor tiles, state-of-the-art appliances from Miele: cooktop, oven, canopy rangehood, and dishwasher. Our expertly-designed kitchens are fit with practical additions, such as pot drawer, overhead cupboards to maximise storage and a bin cupboard. Unlike most other home builders, our award-winning homes offer Caesarstone benchtops as a standard in the kitchen, laundry and bathrooms.
Our bathrooms include contemporary features such as Villeroy&Boch vanity basins and bath, Hansa designer chrome tapware, Caesarstone benchtops, frameless shower screens and generous 1 metre high wall tiling.
Stannard Homes understands the attraction of a beautiful Cape Cod home, with its simple shape and cosy aesthetic. We are also extremely aware of modern needs and have adapted this slice of classic old-school Americana for you and your family!
